Adding PS3 Controller to Mac for Gaming

(This article is taken reference from CultofMac)

I wanted to do this about a year ago (2013).
Then I realized it is not that easy to connect:
  • A PlayStation 3 (PS3) Controller &
  • A Macbook Pro (2010) on OSX
Why do I want to do this?
  • To play 3D games on my Macbook Pro
  • ALL "Feral" Games are natively supporting PS3 controller on Mac environment
  • My Favorite Feral games is Batman: Arkham Asylum

Main problem:
  • The Bluetooth connection failed to re-establish itself automatically (always prompt for passcode)
  • PS3 controller may not be detected after the Macbook Pro is restarted
The reason:
  • After some trial and web search, I realised the setup of the first Bluetooth connection is the most important step to decide if your PS3 controller will work well or not.
The NOT that Easy Setup Steps:

  1. First, launch System Preferences > click to open the Bluetooth preference panel
  2. Click the checkbox next to On, and Discoverable
  3. Plug the mini USB charging cable into an available USB port on your Mac
  4. Next, plug the mini USB end of that same cable into your PS3 controller. The red LED lights will blink slowly, as your Mac is now charging the PS3 controller.
  5. Now, hold the PS button down on the controller, for about 3 seconds.
  6. Then release it, and pull out the USB mini cable from the controller.
  7. Leave USB Cable plugged into the Mac; you’ll need it in a moment.
  8. The red LED lights will start to flash faster, and your Mac will ask for a passcode. Make one up, or use the standard ’0000’ to make the passcode dialog box disappear.
  9. Passcode prompt will come back up again.
  10. Before you type in the passcode again, and again, and again, navigate to the preferences window again > click on the little gear there at the bottom.
  11. Add the PS3 controller to your Favorites list
  12. Click the checkbox next to the ON label again to turn Bluetooth OFF.
  13. Reconnect the mini USB cable to your PS3 controller > press the PS button for 3 seconds again > then pull the cable out.
  14. Your PS3 controller will continue to flash like it’s trying to pair.
  15. Ignore that and turn Bluetooth on again on your Mac. Your PS3 controller should now show up in the device list, letting you use it with any applications that have support for the controller.
I am well aware PS4 controller is now available.
As I have bought a PS4, there is no reason for me to connect the controller to the Mac anymore.

If you have tried on PS4 controller, let me know if the same approach works or not.

Cheers!
